A Burlington Township firefighter died this morning during a blaze that erupted at his own home on Walnut Lane.

Edward Marbet, 31, rescued his fiancee from their home in Town Estates after the fire broke out about 5:40 a.m., officials said.

He then went back inside to rescue his father, but was overcome when he became trapped. His father escaped the blaze by going out through the back of the house.

Firefighters were able to put out the fire within 15 to 20 minutes. The cause was not immediately known.

Marbet, who had grown up in the township and attended the high school there, lived in a white split-level home in an area known as Town Estates. He died at the scene, officials said. An autospy was scheduled for this afternoon to determine the exact cause of death.

Both the father and the fiancee declined medical treatment.

Marbet was a 14-year veteran of the Burlington Township Fire Department, and served at two of its three stations.

Anthony Correia, director of fire services for the Burlington Township, said that the fatality was the first for the department since the 1940s.

Correia described Marbet as a hard-working family man who held several jobs at once, including in public safety communications and with a limousine service.

"Ed typified firefighters of this nation and the volunteer fire department by trying to help somebody before helping himself," he said.

Correia said that counseling would be provided for firefighters mourning the loss of their comrade and that fire departments from surrounding towns would serve as backup for Burlington Township.
