California Fire Captain Died After Working Fire

    Firehouse.com News

A California fire captain collapsed and died earlier this month after he was involved in a working structure fire.

Capt. Kurt Krebbs, 45, of the Oceanside Fire Department, responded to his last alarm on April 7. He worked a half-shift the following day, and went home to relax, according to U.S. Fire Administration officials.

On April 9, he died of an apparent heart attack at his home.

After graduating in 1985 with a bachelor's degree in business from Cal Poly-Pomona, he joined the Rancho Santa Fe Fire Protection District. He served a short stint at the Encinitas Fire Department and in January 1989, he found his permanent home at the Oceanside Fire Department, a friend, Stuart Sprung, said in a written statement.

"In the firehouse Kurt quickly became known for his uncanny sense of humor. On the fireground he was respected as a skilled, hard worker. Kurt was compassionate and had a love and respect for the life of all creatures. Aside from his wit and unexplainable devotion to his old RX7, he was most known for his generosity. He treated his friends like family and was a devoted son, brother and uncle; treating his sister Melanie's two children as his own," Sprung wrote.
