Atlanta Firefighter Stricken During Exercise, Dies

Funeral services are set for Friday for an Atlanta firefighter who died Tuesday, 10 days after he collapsed after running.

Fire Apparatus Operator Russell B. Schwantes, 39, was assigned to Station 24 at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

"When he returned from mandatory physical training, he developed severe chest pains. The paramedic treated him immediately and he was transported to Atlanta Medical Center," said Atlanta Fire Chief Dennis Rubin.

The 20-year veteran, who had no previous heart trouble, suffered a massive MI. He never regained consciousness. However, fellow firefighters, friends and family remained at his side during his hospital stay.

Fellow firefighters said, "Russell Schwantes was dedicated, motivated, and that his great spirits have inspired many members throughout the Department. He will be greatly missed..."

Chief Rubin said of the operator of one of the largest crash truck at the airport: "He was very, very, very well-liked...This is a shock to the entire department. This is the first duty death in 25 years."

Rubin said Schwantes' colleagues knew something was amiss when he headed for his bunk upon his return from the run.

Visitation will be held Thursday, from 4-8 p.m. at Mowell Funeral Home, Fayetteville, Ga. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Atlanta City Church in Fairburn, Ga.
