Funeral for Denver Firefighter Set for Thursday

    Firehouse.com News

Funeral services will be held Thursday for a veteran Denver firefighter who died Sunday, one week after collapsing and becoming entangled in furniture in a house fire.

Lt. Richard Montoya, 61, died at 9:55 a.m. Sunday at Denver Health Medical Center where he had been in a drug-induced coma.

The 30-year veteran was about 15 shifts shy of retiring. When he was found under debris on the second-floor, his face piece had been knocked off which allowed him to breathe the hot gases. Reports indicated he went into a bedroom instead of down a flight of stairs that would have led him to safety.

He was carried from the building in cardiac arrest. Although his pulse was restored en route to the hospital by Denver paramedics, he never regained consciousness. Throughout his hospitalization, fellow firefighters have been at his side.

    Funeral Information:

Funeral services for Lt. Richard Montoya have been set for 11 a.m. Thursday, May 25 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Denver.

Interment will be at Fort Logan National Cemetery. Following the burial service, a reception will be held at the Colorado Convention Center, beginning about 3:30 p.m.

Departments planning to attend may call 720-865-3865 for information.

The visitation and Rosary are not open to the public, a department spokesperson said.
