Funeral services will be held Friday for a longtime volunteer firefighter who collapsed at a brush fire in a New York village Sunday.

Hector "Sandy" McClune, 76, was assisting at a small brush fire behind Millerton Elementary School when he collapsed. Fellow personnel from Millerton Vol. Fire Co. attempted to revive him. However, their efforts proved fruitless.

McClune was transported to the hospital in nearby Sharon, CT., where he was pronounced dead.

The former lieutenant has been with the all-volunteer department since 1966. He also was a life member.

Flags were moved to half-mast as firefighters mourn the department's first line-of-duty death. The company that has 72 active members remains in service.

    Funeral Information

Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Valentine Funeral Home in Millerton.

Funeral services with full fire department honors will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. The procession will take units through the village to Irondale Cemetery for interment.
