George E. "Gig" McGurl, Jr., 71, a retired Worcester Firefighter, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, Sunday, April 1st in his home.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 44 years, Jeannette N. (Fenuccio) McGurl; a cherished daughter, Patricia A. "Patti" Villa and her husband Jim of Mashpee; his mother Catherine E. "Katie" (Callahan) McGurl of Worcester; two adored grandchildren, Nicholas and Timarie Villa; three brothers William P. McGurl of Paxton, Terrance "Terry" McGurl and Kevin McGurl both of Worcester; a sister, Helen K. Glynn of Lakeland, Florida; many nieces, nephews and friends. A son, Robert W. McGurl passed away in 1983. He was born in Worcester. His father was the late, George E. McGurl, Sr. He graduated from Commerce High, served in the U.S. Navy during Korea and has lived here all his life.

George was a 34 year Fire Fighter of the City of Worcester, working at Providence Street Station before retiring from Ladder 5 in 1995. In 1977, George received a commendation from the City of Worcester for assisting a local citizen in need of help.

He was a member of Our Lady of Loreto Church, The International Brotherhood of Firefighters Local 1009 and The Worcester Fire Relief Association. He loved to garden, tend his yard and the beach. He most enjoyed being with his grandchildren.

The funeral will be held Thursday, April 5th from the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. with a Liturgy of the Word at 11:15 a.m. in Our Lady of Loreto Church, 37 Massasoit Rd. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. Friends and relatives are invited to calling hours, Wednesday, April 4th from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the funeral home. Flowers may be sent or memorial contributions made to the UMass Memorial Hospice, 650 Lincoln St., Worcester 01605.
