BAKER - Three firefighters were hospitalized Saturday after the roof of an unoccupied two-story home collapsed while they were fighting a fire in the 2200 block of Groom Road near La. 19.

The firefighters were searching to see if anyone was inside when the roof collapsed, Baker Mayor Harold Rideau said. The firefighters - two full-time and one volunteer - had minor injuries.

"It doesn't seem to be anything serious," Rideau said.

Baker Fire Department Chief Danny Edwards said one person was treated for dehydration; two others had minor leg and head injuries.

Firefighters responded to the blaze at 2:11 p.m. at the large two-story home and had it under control at 4:29 p.m., Edwards said. The home, about 100 years old, was filled with combustibles such as newspapers, helping the fire get into its walls, he said.

The city dismantled the unstable building Saturday night as firefighters took care of hot spots, Edwards said.
