A firefighter was killed this evening after falling at a burning building in Brooklyn, officials said.

The injured firefighter, Daniel Pujdak, 23, fell from the roof of the building on Leonard Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, which had a small fire on the fourth floor. He was stepping from the roof to a ladder when he apparently lost his balance, authorities said.

The fire was started by a lighted cigarette on the windowsill and was confined to the windowsill. Pujdak had been taken to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan. Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg was on the way there, as was the fire commissioner, Nicholas Scoppetta.

Firefighters answering a call to 911 went to the building shortly before 5 p.m. The fire Department said that about 60 firefighters were dispatched.

It was not immediately clear why the firefighter fell.
