An Orange County firefighter died yesterday morning after collapsing during a routine training exercise, according to The Los Angeles Times.

Firefighter James M. Owen went into full cardiac arrest after participating in an urban search-and-rescue drill.

The 56-year-old firefighter/paramedic spent most of his career at Station 4 in Irvine.

"Jimmy was an icon at Station 4," Battalion Chief Kris Concepcion told the newspaper. "He knew just about everyone in the community . . . He would do just about anything for you. He was known to be one of the best firefighters around."

Concepcion, who was once a paramedic partner of Owen, said he was an assertive firefighter who was "very compassionate" when performing his paramedic duties.

Owen is survived by his wife, Sharon, and sons Jimmy, Daniel and Kevin.
