Police are working to determine who stole the eternal flame from a fallen firefighter's memorial in New London.

The electric light was for Lt. John O'Connor's memorial. O'Connor was killed in the line of duty in 1993.

"It makes a very big difference," said Edwin hale, of New London. "It was very symbolic and very beautiful."

O'Connor died in the line of duty while fighting a fire on Truman Street Feb. 1, 1993. O'Connor was struck and killed by an electrical line that burned off the building.

"He was a really good guy. Sad thing that somebody would do this," said Rocco Basilica, president of the Firefighters Union 48-55.

City employees discovered the damaged memorial, which sits behind city hall. City officials said the last time anyone recalls seeing the light in place was last Tuesday.

Members of the New London Fire Department contacted police.

"The New London Police Department is actively investigating with cameras on the street and hopefully something can come of it," Basilica said. "If anybody int he public knows anything, it would be very helpful to notify firefighters."
