    2012-06-17 Worcester Fire Captain David J. McKeown Jr Retired

    WORCESTER___ David J. McKeown Jr., passed away peacefully with his family at his side after a long-term battle with Alzheimer's disease, Sunday, June 17, 2012 in Christopher House of Worcester. He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Dorothy M. (Chuplis) McKeown; his son, Michael McKeown and his fiancÚ, Claudine Thibodeau; his granddaughter, Christina McKeown of West Brookfield and many nieces and nephews. He was born in Worcester, a son of David J. and Margaret (McNally) McKeown.
    David graduated from Worcester Boys Trade School in 1950 and was a proud member of that school's varsity football team that won the state football championship that year. After graduating, he served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War aboard the Seacraft Norva as a machinist. After he was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1955, he went to work for the Heald Machine Co., as a machinist. David joined the Worcester Fire Department on August 9, 1964. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on May 5, 1972 and promoted to the rank of Captain on November 6, 1983; retiring as Captain of Rescue 1 on December 28, 1996. He also worked for the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy for 21 years, where he served as an instructor and program coordinator. His life's passion was firefighting but he also loved gardening, lighthouses, and the seacoast of Maine. David was a very strong but gentle and kind man. He taught swimming through the Easter Seals program and was always there to help those in need.
    The funeral will be held on Wednesday, June 20, 2012, from DIRSA-MORIN FUNERAL HOME, 298 Grafton St., with a Mass at 10:30 a.m. in St. John Church, 40 Temple St. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery. Calling hours in the funeral home will be on Tuesday, June 19, from 3:30p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
