    LODD 2013-06-08 Worcester Fire District Chief Clifton J. DeCourcy Retired

    Clifton J. DeCourcy
    (June 1, 1952 - June 8, 2013)

    WORCESTER-Clifton J. DeCourcy, 61, Retired District Chief-Worcester Fire Department, died Saturday, June 8 at UMASS Memorial Medical Center after a long battle with Lung Fibrosis.

    He leaves his wife of 37 years, Rosemary (Earielo) DeCourcy, his son, Patrick R. DeCourcy of Worcester, two brothers, John E. DeCourcy of Brookfield and William J. DeCourcy in CA. He also leaves his aunt, Joan Dwyer of Worcester and cousins, John, Thomas and James Dwyer, all of the Worcester Fire Department.
    He was born in Worcester, son of William J. and Olive (Martin) DeCourcy and graduated from St. John’s High School. He later earned a degree in Fire Science at Quinsigamond Community College.
    Chief DeCourcy served 41 years on the Worcester Fire Department. He started in 1972 and served on Engines 15, 10, and 5, until being promoted to Lieutenant in 1979. He became Captain in 1984 and served Engines 6 and 4. Clif was promoted to Chief in 1987 and served cars 3 and 4. He retired as Chief on June 1, 2013.


    Clif was a member of Our Lady of Rosary Church. He enjoyed watching classic car auctions and was an avid New England sports fan. His Irish heritage was very important to him. Clif was also known for his very interesting conversations regarding political matters.

    Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, June 12 from 4-8 pm at CALLAHAN & FAY BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 61 Myrtle Street. The funeral Mass will be held at 10 am on Thursday, June 13 at Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 25 Fales Street. Burial will follow at Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton.


    In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Chief DeCourcy’s memory to Worcester Fire Fighters Local 1009 Scholarship Fund, 625 Chandler Street, Worcester, MA 01602.

    District Fire Chief DeCourcy dies a week after he retires

    WORCESTER — Just a week after he retired, the city lost one of its most dedicated firefighters.

    Retired District Fire Chief Clifton J. DeCourcy, 61, died Saturday after a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis. He retired from the department on June 1 due to his illness.

    "He was the heart and soul of us firefighting firefighters," said Deputy Fire Chief Geoffrey Gardell.

    Deputy Chief Gardell said Chief DeCourcy served in the Fire Department for 41 years, retiring only when he began experiencing health issues.

    "He was one of those guys who didn't want to retire but he didn't want to be a burden," he said.

    Chief DeCourcy joined the Worcester Fire Department in 1972 and served on engines 15, 10 and 5 until he was promoted to lieutenant in 1979. He became a captain in 1984 and was promoted to chief in 1987.

    Deputy Chief Gardell said the last major fire Chief DeCourcy was in command at was Hancock Street.

    "He did a spectacular job," he said. "He had a firefighting and rescue operations at the same time."

    Deputy Gardell said Chief DeCourcy was an elder statesman on the department that younger firefighters like himself looked up to.

    Funeral services for Chief DeCourcy will be Thursday with a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of The Rosary Parish, 25 Fales St. Burial will follow at Worcester County Memorial Park in Paxton.

    Calling hours at the Callahan & Fay Brothers Funeral Home, 61 Myrtle St., will be held Wednesday from 4-8 p.m.

    In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Chief DeCourcy's memory to the Worcester Firefighters Local 1009 Scholarship Fund, 625 Chandler St., Worcester 01602.
