    Bernard G. Holland, 70

    WORCESTER - Bernard G. "Bernie" Holland, 70, retired Worcester Firefighter, died Wednesday, September 4, 2013 in his home surrounded by his loving family.

    He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Doris G. (Borghesani) Holland; a son, Gary B. Holland and his wife, Pamela Holland of West Boylston; a daughter, Cheryl T. Correia and her husband, Jay Correia of Shrewsbury; grandchildren, Julianne, Erinn and Bailey Correia and Elizabeth, Jeffrey and Christine Holland; a nephew, Michael Girouard and his wife Sherri Girouard and their children Tyler and Andrew of Sutton; a niece, Kerri Vanasse and her husband Dennis Vanasse and their children, Sarah, Katherine, Matthew and Thomas of Worcester; a brother, Peter Holland of Worcester and a sister, Mary Duquette of Northbridge; also survived by several special nieces, nephews and many friends.
    He was born in Worcester, and raised in Millbury, son of the late Rudolph P. Holland, Sr. and Agnes (Sheehan) Holland. He graduated from Millbury High School in 1961.
    Bernard was a Firefighter of the City of Worcester for many years before he retired in 1995. Bernie loved his work. After retirement, Bernie and his wife, Doris spent summers in Maine and winters in Nokomis, Florida where they were blessed to have met so many very special friends and create special memories.

    "Bernie" or "Mr. Holland" as he was most often called by his players enjoyed coaching baseball and football. He was very dedicated to several local youth sports organizations in Worcester and Shrewsbury. He was very proud to serve for many years as President of The Worcester Youth Football Association, Jack Barry Little League and Tom Ash Babe Ruth. He was instrumental in the development of the first Jack Barry Girls Softball League.
    Bernie had fun playing golf and horseshoes with family and friends.
    He delighted in his family and his most cherished moments in his life were when he spent time with his grandchildren.
    Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Bernard's family on Sunday, September 8, 2013 from 4-7 PM in the Britton- Shrewsbury Funeral Home, 648 Main Street, Shrewsbury. His funeral will be on Monday, September 9, 2013 from the funeral home with a funeral Mass at 10 AM in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 1290 Grafton Street, Worcester. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, Shrewsbury.
