    2015-07-19 Worcester Firefighter John E. Carey Retired

    John E. Carey, 66

    WORCESTER - John E. Carey, 66, passed away peacefully at home, Sunday, July 19, 2015, with his loving wife, Mary, by his side.

    John is survived by his children, Kathleen and Matthew and Kristine and Michael, four grandchildren, and his niece, Kelly, and nephews, Kevin and Brian. He also leaves behind his brother, Paul F. Carey and his wife, Mary Ann of Millbury, and his sister, Anne M. Peixoto of Saunderstown, Rhode Island.

    Born in Worcester, John was the youngest son of Paul F. Carey, Sr. and Margaret M. Carey. He graduated from Burncoat Senior High School and also attended Quinsigamond Community College.

    He also served in the United States Army Reserve. He was a member of the Worcester Fire Department for 37 years, retiring in 2009.

    John will be lovingly remembered by his family and many friends for his quick wit and keen sense of humor. He especially enjoyed his annual visits to Aruba over the past 30 years, often referring to Aruba as his home away from home. He will be sadly missed and will live in the hearts of his family and friends forever.

    John's family would like to extend its sincere gratitude to the hospice component of the Visiting Nurse Association and its nursing staff who provided such excellent care and support during this difficult time.

    Relatives and friends are invited to visit with the family to celebrate John's life on Tuesday, July 21, from 4 to 7 P.M. at the Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster Street, Worcester. Other arrangements are private.

    In lieu of flowers, donations in John's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society , c/o Cancer Research Institute, One Exchange Plaza, 55 Broadway, Suite 1802, New York, NY 10006.
