December 21, 2001 -- Some Bronx firefighters still mourning the loss of so many lives on Sept. 11 yesterday rejoiced after they helped bring a new life into the world.

The five firefighters and the lieutenant of Engine 42 jumped on their rig at 2 p.m. after getting a call of "an imminent birth" around the corner from their firehouse. They arrived at the apartment of Diamatou and Mamadu Bah at 1774 Eastburn Ave. only moments after the mother of two gave birth to her third child - a boy.

"She was squatting in the hallway and the baby was lying on the towel underneath," said firefighter Mark Verdi, 42.

"The mother and baby were both so quiet, we were concerned whether the baby was breathing," he said.

So Verdi - who in the past had cut the umbilical cords of all three of his own three kids - got out the obstetrics kit and cut the baby
