When he isn't chasing fires, Steve Mercado is chasing balls with a stick. President of the Emperor's Stickball League in the Bronx, Mercado, 38, has been a member of several championship teams and was often named most valuable player in tournaments, said his brother Tony. "He's a very popular man in the Bronx," he said. Steve Mercado was born and raised in the Bronx and graduated from Norman Thomas High School in 1980. He has served 11 years with Engine 40, Ladder 35 in Manhattan. He has been missing since the World Trade Center attack. His wife, Joviana; two sons, Skylar, 6, and Austin, 2; parents Mary and Louis, and another brother, also Louis, are all from the Bronx.
