Richard Prunty, 57, a chief attached to Manhattan's Batallion 2, was a firefighter for 33 years. A resident of Sayville, Prunty also was an Army veteran who saw action during the Vietnam War.

He grew up in Lake Ronkonkoma and attended Sachem High. After attending Alfred State University, Prunty earned an undergraduate degree in behavioral science from the New York Institute of Technology in Old Westbury.

"He liked being a firefighter," said his daughter, Lisa Prunty. "He wanted to be close to everything. He went out on virtually every call."

Prunty was married for 33 years to his wife, Susan. He is also survived by a son, Christopher.
