2010-03-04 Worcester Firefighter John J. Sokowaski, Jr Retired

John J. Sokowaski, Jr., 68, of Worcester, passed away Thursday, March 4th in his home, after a short illness.

John is survived by his wife and partner of 44 years, Cheryl A. (Lafontaine) Sokowaski; his two cherished children, Mark J. Sokowaski and his wife Linda of Charlton; Michelle A. Temple and her husband Russell of Sutton; six beautiful grandchildren, Lucas, Olivia, Christian, Ryan, Nicholas and Emma; a Godson, John Gaimari; and a host of family and friends. John was born in Worcester, the son of John J. Sokowaski, Sr. and Carmella (DeNicola) Sokowaski. He graduated from Worcester Public Schools, served his country in the Massachusetts Army National Guard during the Vietnam War and has lived here all his life.

John worked for the City of Worcester as a Firefighter over thirty years before retiring in 2002. He was a family man full of laughter and loved being Papa to his adored grandchildren. He will be sadly missed.

John was a member of the Local 1009 International Brotherhood of Firefighters Union. A member of the Worcester County Fire and Police Relief Association, and the State, County and Municipal employees Association.

Funeral service will be private and burial in Notre Dame Cemetery will be at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society , 350 Plantation St. The MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. is honored to assist the family with arrangements.
